18 November 2008 - Bright Spark's new antifouling system
|
|
Bright Spark are launching their new 2B Sure electrical antifouling system at METS this week. The product is being distributed by VersaDock International, who report that this new anode system prevents underwater growth without painting or contact with the hull. They go on to claim that the system protects the hull and stern gear, which directly leads to improved performance and reduced fuel costs. It works on any hull material and comprises two electrodes, which are suspended just below the waterline, one at the bow and one ate the stern. These are connected to a control box, which sends an electrical current
to the anodes and releases a limited cloud of copper ions into the
water.
The movement of the ions along the electrical field within the water
prevents fouling – the growth of barnacles, mussels and other forms of
unwanted organic matter that can seriously affect boat speed,
performance and fuel consumption. The system is simple to install and operates on either 12/24VDC or
110/240 VAC power source. Minimal power is used and the field density
and strength of the ions can be adjusted from the control box.
The affects of the system after 10 weeks in use (Source: VersaDock) It is claimed that a single antifouling system is sufficient for boats of up to
20m long. For bigger craft, such as large luxury yachts, two or more systems can be used
together. VersaDock also assert that the system does not harm sealife and is eco-friendly, with VersaDock’s Chris Wilson saying, “The results are amazing. The system has
been tested by The Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research (NIOZ)
and extensive tests have been undertaken on boats and North Sea
navigation buoys – with great success.”
It is being launched on VersaDock’s stand 03.108 at the Marine Equipment
Trade Show (METS), Amsterdam, from November 18-20. VersaDock is also
looking to appoint distributors worldwide.
