08 March 2010 - Abu Dhabi Yacht Show: Overview
By Ellie Brade
Despite sandstorms on the morning of the final day of the Abu Dhabi Yacht Show, people were moving through the show, and His Highness Sheikh Mansoor Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum was in attendance. The show came to a rather watery and abrupt end with the onset of very heavy rain in the final few hours. Rain cleared in time for the Show Close party, on board LoaLoat Al Behar, which was sponsored by The Yacht Report Group and hosted by Fraser Yachts to go ahead as planned. The party was a great way for industry colleagues to celebrate the end of the show before making their way home.
Overall 6000 people attended the 2010 ADYS. Franck Dailles, of Informa said of the show "The feedback we have received from the exhibitors and the positive interest shown by various clients and the number of serious buyers that attended, has been extremely encouraging. The yachting industry, and the number of yachting and marine related businesses in Abu Dhabi has been growing, and we the show is playing a significant role in further strengthening its claim to be a global superyacht destination for this region." There have been mixed reviews from industry members, with both positive and negative feedback, however. A late in the day change of location had some adverse affects on show organisation and footfall was certainly down based on predicted attendance figures, however clearly there were influences beyond the control of the organisers of the show. A statement came from Informa saying "The logistics of moving a show of this scale to a brand new venue in a short span time together with rough weather conditions and the three days mourning, provided significant challenges. We are already working with exhibitors to ensure that next year’s event will be an even bigger success than the 2010 edition." There is certainly work to do for next years show to ensure that the standards needed to justify the attendance of the high calibre exhibitors are met, however we must focus on the positives and the UAE continues to go from strength to strength as an superyachting location and destination. We will be featuring a full report on the show in Issue 113 of The Yacht Report, so make sure to read this issue for an overview. For now, we leave readers with a selection of images from around the show across the three days.
