17 March 2009 - First steel superyacht from Sanlorenzo

As part of their intentional move into the metal superyacht market, Sanlorenzo Spa has announced the creation of its first steel vessel, the Sanlorenzo 44 Steel, which is apparently near completion at the Viareggio Division (the yacht has three decks, a displacement hull in steel and an aluminum superstructure). The exterior design and stylistic lines are the work of Sanlorenzo, with delivering natural light into the boat a key aspect of the concept. The use of significant areas of continuous glazed surfaces on the outside of the yacht also add to the distinctive look of the 44m superyacht.

The internal design is the work of Francesco Paszkowski who, in collaboration with the owner, produced the interior decoration and lighting system (which is design to produce a cascade affect). The boat has been targeted at a percieved current trend in the superyacht market, where owners want maximum space, comfort and luxury, rather than speed and performance (with Sanlorenzo commenting that green issues are playing an increasing role in this choice). This project brief was achieved by the Sanlorenzo Technical Department first crafting a large hull with open stern, that would provide sufficient interior volume, and offer top performance, but maintain optimal stability and trim - as required by the MCA certification standards. The gross tonnage of the 44 Steel is 499 GT, a value that is generally associated with boats of a longer LOA.

The use of box‐in‐box construction delivers comfort and space inside, with each internal area comprising a a self‐supporting shell, a “floating” box connected to the structure via a series of elastic and anti‐vibration materials placed in between to dampen and cut off all vibrations and noise. In terms of accommodation the guest rooms are found on the lower deck forward, and have a traditional layout with two VIP cabins (below, left) and two twin bed cabins. The crew's quarters  are situated in the bow, and have a galley with a dinette, four double cabins for eight people along with a private bathroom with shower. The captain's room is located on the upper deck, near the bridge.

The yacht comes with a guest's saloon on the main and upper deck, owner's quarters with a master cabin (above, right), an office and big walk‐in closet. The master cabin itself is a full beam room that includes a private bathroom with relaxation zone and whirlpool tub. A dining zone for guests is provided on the upper deck (below, left), which is supplied with a round table for 12/14 people surrounded by huge sliding doors in plate glass that reproduce its shape and that open fully for a meal “en plain air”. There is also a saloon equipped with a bar counter and, at the opposite end, a comfortable L‐shaped sofa and a low table. The flybridge (below, right) priovides impressive views with a protecting hard-top, along with an area for the sun bathing with pool and sundeck.

The superyacht also includes other innovative features such as a under lower deck, essentially a further deck situated below the lower deck consisting of a central tunnel running all the way from stern to bow, and housing the technical areas (fins, bow‐thruster and engine rooms) and the service areas (the laundry room, with three washing machines and three driers, an ironing board, and a refrigeration zone with a freezer and cold storage rooms). The under lower deck also gives access to the engine room.

Externally the design makes best use of the space available, in a series of of terraces overlooking the sea. The vessel's garage can accommodate a large tender, with two symmetrical stowage facilities providing room for a jet ski and rescue boat on the main deck. Recreation activities are also provided in the form of a Beach Club that houses a fitness area complete with gym and relaxation equipment (Spa) and a dedicated bathroom. The Beach Club itself looks out onto a substantial bathing platform.
