From the drawing board of London-based Rainsford Mann Design (newly renamed as reported here on synfo.com) comes the 80metre Eco Yacht design (pictured below); the result of an in-house study of the potential technologies and operations that could be implemented to reduce the carbon and ecological footprint of a luxury vessel as well as reducing operating costs and increasing comfort for those onboard. Several features incorporated into her design contribute to her
well-deserved title of Eco Yacht, including a wind turbine and use of
the Sky Sail technology.
On board are electrically driven Azipull Thrusters which are charged by ultra-efficient
generators. Vibrations, noise and emissions produced when underway at a low speed would be reduced thanks to these generators that are able to be staged according to power
requirement. This in turn reduces any ecological impact
when mooring near fragile environments such as coral reefs. 100sqm of Solar
Electric Panels and a Vertical Axis Wind-Turbine charge at up to 30kW,
powering some of the low energy systems on board such as the long-lasting
LED lighting throughout the vessel. Water Filled Solar Heating
Panels absorb the sun’s heat which is used to drive an absorption
chiller which can then reduce the air temperature within the
vessel, thereby reducing load on the air conditioning systems. The absorption chiller system can also be driven by excess heat
energy onboard the vessel such as that being prodiced by the generators. Further reductions
in AC load can be achieved by naturally ventilating the vessel with
cool air drawn through shaded seawater and by using specially treated
glazing combined with external shutters to reduce Infra-Red heat
transmission to the interior. A foredeck launched Sky Sail
system reduces fuel consumption by up to 50% on open water, harnessing
the power and consistency of the wind at altitudes up to 300m above sea
level.
In addition to her eco-friendly attributed the 80.5metre design would be able to house her owner along with 12 guests in luxurious surroundings, not compromised by the ecological benefits of her design. Aspects of the design include a balcony that folds out from the side of the owner's suite to create an open-air platform above the water. Toys onboard would include a 9metre Limousine,
an 8metre Dive Boat and 3 Jet skis, stored in aft tender garages, with a
4.5m Rescue Tender and additional jet skis stored in a forward garage.
It is clear that all these contributing factors will work together to
form a yacht that really is designed with reducing the effect of luxury
yachts on the environment in mind. With designs like this now on
offer, owning an environmentally friendly yacht seems to be more of a
pleasure than a chore!
