09 December 2009 - Retrieving the spinnaker: the CT Snuffair
|
|
By Adam Turner
The Yacht Report was very pleased to recently meet Fraser Brown and Lara Cooper of C-Tech Ltd, a New Zealand based company, to discuss one of the latest superyacht products dedicated to the impressive sailing yachts that grace the fleet. As anyone with real experience of sailing and racing yachts will know, dealing with the huge and delicate spinnaker can be both time consuming and an extremely stressful experience - getting it wrong can lose you the race or quite possibly damage the spinnaker sail itself. To that end the CT Snuffair has been designed to resolve some of these issues, making the process of retrieving the spinnaker simpler and making the whole sailing experience that little bit more enjoyable.
Comprising an inflatable retrieval system for a spinnaker sock (the supply of the sock itself is optional) of a 60ft and larger yacht, it is intended to replace the solid hoop or bucket traditionally used with the socks. It is attached to the sock with high strength zips and has a chafe guard and is made from anti-burn materials. Being soft and flexible it can avoid potential damage to crew or rigging, while also being easily deflated and stored below decks while in transit and immediately after stowed in the fore-hatch.
The system is currently in use on a impressive array of vessels including Bliss, Crackerjack, Hamilton II, Hyperion, Kokomo, Moonbird, Nostromo, Pink Gin, Salute, Saudade, Sojana and Visione. It also went through its development stages onboard the 35m SY Sojana, built in 2003. The company would be pleased to receive any inquiries about the CT Snuffair.
