19 February 2009 - Sabdes 50m superyacht catamaran
|
|
The latest superyacht design from Sabdes Design is an attempt to move away from the concept of a yacht's value directly related to its length, with instead the focus being on promoting 'green' luxury yachting through the use of an innovative catamaran yacht design. The catamaran will attempt to use environmentally friendly materials
and construction methodology whenever possible, and aims to be 'carbon
neutral'. Sabdes have revealed that RINA 'green star' certification will be sought and carbon offsets
will be purchased to equal the amount of carbon dioxide created thoughout
the vessels cruising life, and whenever guests stay onboard. The
ultimate goal: a carbon neutral yacht. Sabdes state that when built, this new 50m design would represent the largest superyacht catamaran in the international fleet, with the client currently started negotiations with a Taiwanese Shipyard as a preferred designer and builder.
Deciding to use a catamaran platform to form the basis of this yacht design was apparently influenced by a need to provide comfortable accommodation for 10 guests, but within a yacht with shallow enough draft to allow it to visit smaller bays and unusual locations. The twin hulls of a catamaran have the additional benefit of delivering better vessel stability, which in turn gives guests a more comfortable and enjoyable experience when underway. The twin hulls themselves are asymmetrical axebows with a high tunnel between, which are projected to deliver over 20 knot plus performance.
The original brief from the client included the need to intergrate into the accommodation a 'satellite headquarters' to maintain contact with his corporation while aboard. To this end the upper most deck is mostly dedicated to a conferencing office, with advanced communications and network systems allowing access to land based servers from anywhere on the globe. For entertaining, the superyacht contains several outdoor levels, as requested by the client who wishes to optionally be able to cater for business functions onboard. The main deck contains a 5m wide glass horizon pool, with another particular feature of this yacht a glass observation window in the floor of the salon, where
guests may view the marine life below inbetween the hulls of the catamaran.
In terms of propulsion, and following the theme of green yachts, the vessel is propelled by hybrid diesel electric technology, a combination of conventional diesel-electric shaft drives with twin cycloidal rudders which in passive mode steer the vessel; in dynamic mode this system allows the superyacht to cruise at up to 8 knots silently while reportedly producing zero emissions by using its Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries for power. Solar panels on the upper deck will complement the hybrid technology, putting charge back into its Lithium Iron Phosphate battery banks. The diesel generators are being optimised to run on alternative fuels such as biodiesel (cellulosic based), and will have gas particle separators in the exhausts - the main intent being low impact marine friendly operation.
Total power consumption is to be kept to a minimum by optimising ship's systems where possible; for instance the cycloidal rudder system also offers dynamic positioning and efficient roll damping. The yacht will have LED lighting throughout and there will be more reliance on natural cooling to support the air conditioning system. All exterior glass will be coated with an air-cavity paint which will improve the thermal insulation of the interior. Even a gutter is being integrated into the uppermost deck to catch rain water supporting the vessels water storage and extending its cruising independence.
